The dwarf lake iris is an endangered wildflower that grows here in Door County. They are pretty easy to find in Door County but extremely rare in other areas. Being so close to the lake we have the perfect environment for such a fragile flower that is only about the size of a half-dollar.

Cracker appearing at the Door Community Auditorium by Len Villano

The rock band Cracker appeared at the Door Community Auditorium, Saturday, May 5 in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin. Performing a lot of old favorites as well as some new compositions Cracker put on an exciting show that had audience members dancing in the aisles. Performing hits like “Low ( Like Being Stoned ) and “Euro Trash Girl” Cracker performed a double encore to an enthutisastic crowd. To see more photos from the concert follow the link

Door County is famous for Cave Point County Park among other things. Cave Point is a photographers paradise so it has been photographed thousands of times. On my latest trip to the park I decided to turn away from the water and look for photos elsewhere. I liked the contrast of the new seed pods against the deep blue sky and taught that was a definite sign of Spring. I used a polarizing filter to darken the sky ( Ansel Adams and most black and white photographs would used a red filter to get a similar effect ) and cut down on reflections so the seed pods stand out. Jeanne Kuhns and Lost Mothra performed a benefit concert for the Door County Wellness Center at the Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Along with Jeanne, George Sawyn on guitar and Patrick Palmer on bass, Jeanne’s daughter Mary Beth Mattson and fine cellist Hans Cristian made guest appearances. Since the shore of Lake Michigan is a natural bird migration route many species of birds pass thru Door County in the spring and fall. Hawks can be plentiful this time of year and I never miss an opportunity to photograph them. Here I positioned myself so the blue sky formed the back drop for the hawk causing the bird to really pop out of the image. To see more of my photos follow the link

Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k Run by Len Villano

The annual Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5k Run was held last Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. More then 1600 runners in the Half Marathon and just shy of 600 in the 5k run made for an exciting event. Please follow the link to see more photos

Spring in Door County brings lots of bright high blue sky days. Here I used a polarizing filter to darken the sky and cut the glare of the bright sun. Thru the frame of the bridge you can see Sturgeon Bay, Bay Ship yards and a fishing boat on the water. To see more of my photos go to

Another example of the fact that your photo subjects do not have to be exotic or hard to find to be interesting. This field of dandelions shot late in the day creates patterns of contrast between the yellow of the flower and the green leaves. Field of dandilions near Jacksonport, Door County, WI. Fox snakes are often mistaken for rattle snakes because of similar markings and their habit of rattling their tales in the leaves to mimic rattle snakes. Snakes mate this time of year, early May. The warm pavement helps to regulate the snakes body temperature on a cool day. Fox snake sometimes called a pine snake rest on the warm pavement on Bagnel road in Door County. I spotted my first trillium of the year today in a small patch of woods in Potawatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay. Of course having the bug on the blossom was just good timing. Go here to see more

I like red winged black birds. Like robins they are one of the first birds to arrive back in Door County so they remind me of spring. And they are just plain fun to watch. More images here

Flowers are one of the most often photographed subjects so it’s hard to find a different view. Here I photographed this Dame’s Rocket plant from behind the blossums and used the orthon effect to give it that glow. I shoot a double exposure. One in perfect focus and one just slightly out of focus.

I spotted this red bellied woodpecker stuffing seeds into a dead birch trunk. When photographing birds and wildlife getting down to their eye level can make for a more interesting image.

I spotted this immature bald eagle in Baileys Harbor near Kangaroo Lake. He/she is young probably around three years old because it has most of it’s white head feathers but not all. Bald eagles start out without the white head feathers which fill in gradually as the eagle matures. Follow the link

The leaves are out and Door County looks awesome. Many trees have leaves on them now like the ones pictured here. Photographically I like contrast and look for situations where I can use the natural contrast in the scene. We have the yellow/green leaves against the blue sky. The yellow/green leaves against the white tree trunks but we also have the contrast of the evergreen trees with the newly leafed decidous trees. Follow the link to see more
