I hope you all got to see the Gibraltar presentation of Once Upon a Mattress last weekend at the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin. It was amazing. The kids where outstanding, the costumes spectacular, the staging and lighting totally amazing and the choreography was top notch. Congratulations to all for a awesome presentation. Colder then last year but still sunny and fun. Sturgeon Bay held their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade Saturday, March 16, 2013 in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin and it was a good one. Nobody seemed to mind the cold (too much) because they were having so much fun. This little girl cuddled up with her dog and enjoyed some of the candy before tossing the rest to the parade spectators. Check out the photos here and Erin Go Bragh!

Door County 2013 Day 38 Nasty Weather

Day 38 brought nasty weather to Door County with freezing rain, freezing fog, ice, with white out conditions and blowing snow. One of those days when if you could stay home, stay home. But photographers are either very brave or just stupid or some combination of both. I decided to try to get some photos but as you can see from this image visibility was low at best. Extreme weather can bring exceptional photo opportunities but often the best time to shoot is just before or just after the storm. When caught in the storm like I was here your camera gear can get very wet with the falling snow and even the moisture from your breath. Never wipe the camera because you will just force water into the cracks. So dap it dry with a clean white towel. When you get home place all your equipment on a dry towel and then cover it with another dry towel. This will suck the moisture up and off your camera and lenses. So if you’re feeling brave get it out and shoot but remember safety comes first so be careful. To see more of my winter photos follow the links

Door County 2013 Day 31 Big Snow Day 2 by Len Villano

Big snow yesterday in Door County you can see those photos on the Door County Photos website. But today was a better photo day all around. A true winter wonderland and with the cold temperatures the snow should last through the weekend and the Fish Creek Winter Festival today thru Sunday. I traveled around Door County looking for interesting images and there where a lot to be found. The problem was that you just can’t shoot all of them. I liked this image because of the fence, the bent over tree due to the weight of the ice and snow and the two summer chairs in the background long since abandoned but hopeful for the return of summer. Winter is a great time to be out photographing. Generally quite and peaceful you can feel totally alone at times. Many interesting subjects to photograph and with modern cameras no worries. Modern cameras can handle the cold very well. If you can stick it out so will your camera. The trouble might come from your batteries going dead faster then usual due to the low temperature. Keep spares inside your coat close to your body and just switch back and forth. Wear layered clothing. More thin layers are better then one heavy layer. Keep your head and hands warm. Wear inner liner gloves under your heavy gloves. Get one of the mitten keepers we used to wear as children. Then when you need to work your camera you can slip off the heavy glove and it will just hang there until your ready to slip it back on.
